And Catherine Tyldesley on being “Mr Bean with boobs!”

As fans of Coronation Street will probably know, four of the show’s stars, Sue Cleaver, Ryan Thomas, Brooke Vincent and Ben Price, recently jetted off to Africa to film the moving documentary, Corrie Goes To Kenya.

We’ll see the first part of the special film on Friday at 9pm on ITV1, and ahead of it, the actors have all revealed what a huge impact filming in the poverty stricken slum areas of Kenya had on them.

Sue, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, said that she’d decided to take part in the film hoping that she can help to raise awareness of the plight of some of the people she met.

She said, “To be able to make just a tiny, weeny bit of difference, I was like, ‘yes, absolutely, I’m on board’.”

And Brooke, who plays Sophie Webster, added, “I’m an emotional person and I know I’m going to want to take all of these people home with me, that’s what I’m like.”

The Corrie stars visited the biggest slum in Mombasa, Kenya’s second city, where an average of seven people live in each home, and where a poor sewerage system and lack of running water mean that cholera and dysentery are huge issues in the community… Continue reading »

There’s a great deal of life or death drama headed our way on Coronation Street in upcoming episodes, when not only does Tommy Duckworth put his life at risk by falling asleep while driving, but jilted husband Dev Alahan will also attempt to commit suicide!

Starting with Tommy, the Sun’s TV Biz reports that his dramatic crash comes after he takes on another job delivering pizza in order to try to pay back the money he loaned from Tyrone Dobbs.

However, as he works all day at the garage, his night job proves too much and he falls asleep at the wheel of his delivery van.

Luckily he survives, but has this been literally the wake up call that Tommy needs to realize he can’t carry on like this?

Over to Dev’s drama now, and as fans of Corrie will know, his wife Sunita has not only ditched him, she’s also moved her fancy man Karl Munro into the couple’s house, which leaves Dev utterly devastated… Continue reading »

Plus, Emmerdale’s Steve is glad Zak’s no longer a violent man, and Corrie’s Brooke Vincent says Sophie won’t go straight!

We’ll begin today’s round up of soapy news with the report in today’s Daily Mail that Jacqueline Jossa’s father has been sentenced to four years in prison for the theft of half a million pounds.

Jacqueline, who of course plays Lauren Branning, reportedly wept as she sat in court to hear her dad John plead guilty to three offences of dishonesty or tampering with expenses during his time as head of finance at Enfield Council.

The paper reports that 58-year-old John “siphoned off” £491,088.35 into his own bank account between 2006 and 2010, £42,000 of which was in false wage payments to his wife, who he pretended worked at the council.

However, he lost most of the money to scams, and only £25,000 was recovered when Enfield Council launched legal proceedings against him.

Judge Nicholas Cooke at the Old Bailey told John that he had, “embarrassed the vast majority of hard working…government employees” with his “criminally distorted thinking.”

Judge Cooke added, “In addition to being fully dishonest, he’s a fool… Your offending will have real consequences to local residents in terms of reduced services or a decline in payments for those that live in the area.”

Moving on to Emmerdale news now, and Steve Halliwell has revealed that he’s glad that his character, Zak Dingle, is no longer the violent man he was before he had his breakdown… Continue reading »

Brooke Vincent has reportedly signed a new contract to stay with Coronation Street and her role as lesbian teen Sophie Webster for at least another year.

Brooke has played the role of Sophie since she was 12, and it seems that as the show’s writers have some big storylines for the Webster family lined up this year, ITV execs were keen to ensure Brooke didn’t leave the soap.

A Corrie insider told the Daily Star, “They’ve got some huge storylines planned, including a new love interest, and there’s lots more coming up for the Webster family.

“Brooke is one of the hottest young soap actresses out there and Phil knows that keeping such talent on the show is key to its success in the future.”

Rumour has it that Sophie is due to become addicted to crack cocaine later this year when Ryan Connor – who is Michelle Connor’s son – returns to Weatherfield.

Meanwhile, Catherine Tyldesley has revealed that she’s hoping her contract will also be renewed this year, because she’s loving playing the part of feisty Eva Price… Continue reading »
