Celebrity Quitters

Weeknights at 7.30pm

Five celebrity smokers attempt to kick the habit in this factual series. Actress Linda Robson, chef John Burton Race, model Chloe Madeley, actor Paul Danan and medium Derek Acorah each have a personal motive for wanting to quit. They will employ a variety of methods in an effort to wean themselves off the weed. Can they erase smoking from their lives for good?

Every weeknight over the course of two weeks, viewers have the chance to follow a group of celebrities in their bid to stop smoking. The stars are now halfway through their quest – how are they getting on in their struggle to quit?

On Monday’s programme, the celebrities embark on their first weekend without smoking. Saturday sees a number of them having strange dreams and there is drama in store when Paul fails his CO2 test. John visits London and meets up with Linda and Chloe when they are presented with an unconventional and challenging task.

Tuesday’s programme sees the celebs battling through their eighth day. So far, they have all managed without fags – but that changes when one of the stars confesses to having had a smoke in the night. The revelation causes consternation and a new wave of doubt amongst the others.

Wednesday’s programme marks ten days since the celebrities quit cigarettes – and things are not working out as expected. Linda is starting to embrace the non-smoking lifestyle as she goes shopping with her smoking sisters to spend the money she has saved since quitting. Chloe excels at an outdoor pursuit centre, but Paul reaches an alltime low and is losing faith in his attempts to quit.

In Thursday’s programme, the end is in sight for the celebrities. Linda has to deal with smoking actors at her panto rehearsal. Chloe visits an oral cancer unit and vows to get her friends to quit as well after seeing first-hand the damage smoking can cause. Meanwhile, Paul has a confession to make.

In the final programme, on Friday, all five celebrities meet up with their families and friends to reveal how they managed – and one family has a shock in store. And the show catches up with each of the celebrities two weeks on to see if they are managing not to smoke now that the cameras have gone…

On Monday’s programme, the celebs try alternative therapies and techniques to keep them motivated. Paul experiences hypnosis, Chloe tries pole dancing lessons and John attempts acupuncture. The day ends with Paul facing the challenge of a night out drinking with his smoking mates – how will he cope?

Monday 18th January 7.30pm

Five celebrity smokers attempt to kick the habit in this new factual series. Linda Robson, John Burton Race, Chloe Madeley, Paul Danan and Derek Acorah each have a personal motive for wanting to quit. They will employ a variety of methods in an effort to wean themselves off the killer weed. Can they erase smoking from their lives and overcome the horrors of withdrawal?

Every weeknight over the course of two weeks, viewers have the chance to follow a group of celebrities in their bid to stop smoking. These five well-known faces have little in common other than their avid desire to ditch tobacco for good.

TV psychic Derek Acorah is the heaviest smoker of the group, puffing his way through 40-50 cigarettes a day. Derek is about to turn 60 and he knows that his habit is a medical time bomb waiting to go off.

‘Birds of a Feather’ star Linda recently started smoking again after 17 years on the wagon. With a family history of smoking and heart disease, she is determined to live long enough to see her grandchildren grow up.

Michelin-starred chef John Burton Race runs a restaurant in Dartmouth. John wants to quit for the sake of his five-year-old son and arrest his own deteriorating health and fitness.

Actor Paul Danan is best known for his role as Sol Patrick in ‘Hollyoaks’, which he played between 1997 and 2001. Paul is desperate to give up smoking, especially after being told his ‘lung age’ is 46 years – 15 more than his actual age.

TV presenter Chloe Madeley is the daughter of Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan. Despite being the youngest of the group, the model and occasional journalist realises that it is never too early to stub out cigarettes.

Under the watchful eye of GP Dr Ayan Panja and clinical psychologist Dr Cecilia d’Felice, the participants learn more about the diseases that come from smoking and take on challenges that push them to their limits. As they begin to confront their fears, the five learn more about themselves. They also come to understand why the choice they make – whether to be a smoker or a quitter – is one of the defining decisions of their lives.

God bless Five. They’ll film any old rubbish. Not content with giving us Keith Chegwin’s Naked Jungle and Touch the Truck, but they’re now giving us something so mind-insulting banal that you get the impression that future shows could include ‘Arse Scratching In The Morning’ and ‘Filming Hangovers’.

Elsewhere, I’ve spoken about Heads or Tails, a show that features Justin Lee Collins tossing a coin for thirty minutes… and now, we’re getting Celebrity Quitters.

This new series follows celebrities as they attempt to give up smoking.

So who signed up? Well, we’ve got Chloe Madeley, Derek Acorah, Linda Robson, John Burton Race and… here’s the best news for people who enjoy watching slightly famous people having a meltdown on our screens… Paul Danan will be taking part.

What a ragtag bunch that is!

TV charlatan Acorah is apparently the heaviest smoker amongst the group. He gets through 40 to 50 cigarettes a day. To be perfectly honest, that’s the first time in my life he’s ever got close to impressing me. That’s a spectacular amount of smokes. I bet he goes through six lighters a week.

Linda Robson (her from Birds of a Feather) said of the series: “Like most smokers, I’ve tried to give up many times with varying degrees of success. But this time I’m hoping I’ll be able to kick the habit for good.”

The 10-part series begins Monday, January 18 on Five.
