Ruth visits Tim Le Grice and his family, owners of Trereife House in Penzance, Cornwall. After inheriting the crumbling manor and its huge debts in 1986 Tim has spent the past 25 years trying to turn around the fortunes of his family home. But Trereife is a house in peril, falling down at the seams. And while holding down a full time job as a solicitor Tim has been working 15 hours a day trying new business ventures to give them a much needed cash injection. The house is making a loss, it’s falling apart, and the bank is close to forcing a sale.

Whitbourne Hall is a vast Palladian-style mansion built in 1860. Tucked away in the Worcestershire countryside, it was taken on in the 1970s by a group of friends who set up a ‘community’ to live, work and eat together. Restoring the stunning property has been a labour of love for the Whitbourners but the Hall still requires tens of thousands of pounds for restoration.

The Kellys live in Kelly House in Kelly village, Devon, which overlooks Bodmin Moor. The family has lived on the site for nearly 1,000 years. Kelly House is a Grade I listed building that dates back to the 1740s. But years of neglect due to lack of funds mean the property urgently needs a complete overhaul.

Now she’s back, checking up on some familiar faces to see if they took her advice or carried on regardless. Last year Ruth met Mary-Anne and Alastair Robb, the owners of Cothay, a medieval manor house in Somerset. Ruth was keen to turn Cothay into a professional enterprise, but met with resistance from Mary-Anne. Did they work together to transform Cothay into a sculpture park, in time for a special garden party?
