Each edition of Soccer USA is based at a MLS match and features guests, special reports and films bringing to life all the characters and stories of the US game. The programme also includes ‘David Beckham’s Blog’ –an exclusive insight into the Beckham family’s new life across the Atlantic. Tim Lovejoy hosts the show, while Natalie Pinkham reports from the States.

Soccer USA’s other weekly features include interviews with other football stars who have made the switch to the American league; a look at famous supporters of MLS teams, such as Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg; ‘WAGs USA’, focusing on some of the most glamorous footballers’ wives in MLS; and a tongue-in-cheek guide to American footballing terms.

Tonight’s programme features highlights of LA Galaxy’s match against FC Dallas, who currently hover in third place in the Western Conference. Dallas’s star player is this year’s signing Denílson, once the world’s most expensive player. Denílson, a two-time World Cup winner with Brazil, still retains a formidiable presence on the left side of the pitch.

For their part, LA Galaxy will be hoping for a result against Dallas that will help push them towards the play-offs and thereby win a place in the MLS Cup final in November, which is played between the Eastern and Western Conference winners. Galaxy have their work cut out to chase the current conference leaders, Houston, but have the advantage of having played fewer games than any of their rivals. With a packed September and October schedule, David Beckham’s side will be desperate to finish the season on a high.

LA Galaxy recently thrilled a 12,500 crowd in the final of the inaugural SuperLiga, competing in a hard-fought match against Mexican side FC Pachuca. Pachuca took the lead through an own goal, only for Galaxy to snatch an extraordinary equaliser in the 93rd minute with Chris Klein’s bicycle kick from eight yards out. With the scores 1-1 after extra time, the US side slipped to a 4-3 defeat in the penalty shootout. Nonetheless, the eventful final bodes well for the future of the fledgling North American competition.

Unfortunately, David Beckham was forced to retire from the game in the 33rd minute after sustaining a knee injury in a tackle. Scans have yet to reveal the extent of the injury, but both player and club will be hoping he can make a rapid recovery.

David continued his positive start in the US by playing a full 90 minutes for LA Galaxy in the game against the New York Red Bulls. David set up three goals in the game despite still not having fully recovered from his ankle injury, but it was not quite enough to stop Galaxy slipping to a 5-4 defeat against the Eastern Conference side. The Red Bulls were helped to victory by a brace from former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Ángel. But David and LA Galaxy can take heart from record attendance figures of 66,237 – at a stadium where New York normally attract around 11,500. Can LA bounce back to winning ways and smash a few more records in this week’s game?

David Beckham recently made his first start with LA Galaxy after shaking off a niggling ankle injury, and capped the occasion by opening his goalscoring account for the club. Galaxy’s Galactico signing showed the world why he is worth every cent the club paid for him by curling in a trademark 30-yard free kick against DC United. Beckham, wearing the captain’s armband, led his teammates to their first win in four games and helped Galaxy secure a place in the final of the SuperLiga, the new competition between MLS and Mexican Premier League sides. But can he add more goals to his tally in this week’s game?

The team shares the Home Depot Center stadium with LA Galaxy and enjoys widespread support among the city’s Latino population. Chivas are third in the Eastern conference after 17 games and will be seeking full points in what promises to be a tense derby game.

Colorado Rapids, meanwhile, are based in Commerce City, Colorado, and currently sit between Chivas USA and LA Galaxy in fourth place in the eastern standings. Colorado boast a solid track record in MLS, having reached the semi-finals of the play-offs on three occasions. Colorado recently announced a partnership deal with Arsenal to open a centre of excellence in Colorado and promote the Arsenal brand in the US.

In the fifth instalment of the series, David Beckham continues to provide all his latest news from the US as he settles into his new career in LA. This week’s featured game will be LA Galaxy’s inter-conference clash with the New York Red Bulls, who are currently third in the eastern standings. The club play out of the enormous Giants Stadium in New Jersey, also home to the NFL teams the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

Lining up in the squad against David Beckham will be at least one familiar face from the English Premiership: former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Ángel, who completed his move to New York Red Bull in May. Ángel has scored a staggering nine goals in his first 12 games, and will be looking to extend his excellent opening run against LA Galaxy.

In the fourth instalment of the series, David Beckham continues to provide all his latest news from the US as he settles into his new career in LA. His much-anticipated debut for the Galaxy saw him star in a friendly against English Premiership runners-up Chelsea –Beckham’s old rivals from his days at Manchester United. Beckham showed some deft touches during a cameo appearance after coming onto the pitch in the 78th minute to huge cheers and a sea of camera flashes. He withstood a heavy challenge from Chelsea’s Steve Sidwell, and gave his fans a glimpse of the skills they can expect throughout the rest of the season, before applauding the star-studded, sellout crowd at The Home Depot Center on the final whistle.

Galaxy lost the match 1-0, but can take some real positives from the performance as they prepare for their first competitive matches with their new star.

This week, presenter Tim Lovejoy will be joined in the studio by guest Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton, while Natalie Pinkham reports from the States. Today’s show features highlights of LA Galaxy’s high-profile clash at Toronto FC, the newest and only non-US side in the league. Formed in 2006, Toronto FC are based at the brand-new 20,000seater BMO Field stadium, also home to the Canadian national side, and the venue for this year’s Under-20s FIFA World Cup.

Toronto play in MLS’s Eastern Conference and are coached by former Scotland international Mo Johnson. A regular in the Scotland side between 1984 and 1992, Johnson played for Watford, Celtic and French team Nantes, before making a controversial move to Rangers in 1989. Johnson’s first foray into MLS was in 1996, playing for the Kansas City Wizards. After retiring as a player in 2001, he had a spell as manager of Red Bull New York before taking up the reins in Toronto.

So far, the fledgling Canadian side has struggled in its inaugural season, languishing second from bottom in the table after 16 games. But, despite its short history, Toronto can count upon a strong fan base to lift the team, with season tickets capped at 14,000 –a record for the league. Toronto’s fans are renowned as the most boisterous in MLS, with a number of officially-recognised supporters groups –including ‘Red Patch Boys’ and ‘U-Sector’ – all promising to give Galaxy’s new signing a raucous reception when he plays there for the first time.
