19.30–20.00

Continuing on Five this evening is the magazine show that offers an inside look at Major League Soccer. Coinciding with David Beckham’s move to LA Galaxy, Soccer USA provides a comprehensive guide to football in North America, with match highlights, news, interviews and goals from the up-and-coming American league. Each edition features guests, special reports and films bringing to life all the characters and stories of the US game. The programme also includes ‘David Beckham’s Blog’ –an exclusive insight into the Beckham family’s new life across the Atlantic. Tim Lovejoy hosts the show, while Natalie Pinkham reports from the States.

Soccer USA’s other weekly features include interviews with other football stars who have made the switch to the American league; a look at famous supporters of MLS teams, such as Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg; ‘WAGs USA’, focusing on some of the most glamorous footballers’ wives in MLS; and a tongue-in-cheek guide to American footballing terms.

Tonight’s programme features highlights of LA Galaxy’s game against the Kansas City Wizards. The Kansas side – whose name is inspired by the film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ – have won the MLS Cup once in their history, in 2000. They are currently fourth in the Eastern Conference and, like LA, will be desperate to bag all three points in order to push themselves into contention for the play-offs.

The regular MLS season ends in October, to be followed by a series of play-off games to decide the winner of the league. Six teams participate in the play-offs: the top teams in the Eastern and Western Conferences, and the next four highestplaced sides, irrespective of their conference. The play-off games consist of a two-leg knock-out round, followed by a match to decide the winner of each conference, and finally the MLS Cup. This showpiece game in November is played between the winners of the Eastern and Western Conferences and marks the end of the season.

game 1 (1/12)
wednesday, 19.15–20.00

Starting on Five this week is a new magazine show offering an inside look at Major League Soccer, as football’s biggest star prepares to start a sporting revolution in the USA.

Coinciding with David Beckham’s move to LA Galaxy, Soccer USA provides a comprehensive guide to football in North America and charts the world’s most famous player as he begins a new phase of his career. The series presents game highlights, along with a roundup of news, interviews, goals and stats from the up-andcoming American league. Each edition of Soccer USA is based at a MLS match and features guests, special reports and films bringing to life all the characters and stories of the US game. The programme also includes an exclusive insight into David Beckham’s new life as he and his family find their feet across the pond.

Strands to be featured throughout the series include ‘David Beckham’s Blog’, providing a weekly look into the Beckhams’ family life as they move into their new $8 million LA home. The show also looks at other footballers who have been “green-carded”, making the switch from the English league to MLS, including former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel, who now plays for Red Bull New York; ex-Newcastle and West Ham keeper Shaka Hislop, signed to FC Dallas; and former Liverpool star Steve Nichol, now coach of New England Revolution.

Soccer USA also turns the spotlight on famous supporters of MLS teams, such as Tom Cruise (a dedicated fan of good friend David Beckham’s new club, LA Galaxy), Steven Spielberg (also LA Galaxy), TV presenter Jon Stewart (New York Red Bulls) and Eric Clapton (Columbus Crew). Further features include ‘WAGs USA’, focusing on some of the most glamorous footballers’ wives in MLS; a look at the stories behind the unusual names of MLS clubs; and a tongue-in-cheek translation of American words for football terms: just how did a ‘cup tie’ become a ‘sudden-death match-up’?

This week’s opening edition takes an in-depth look at Toronto FC, where David will play his first competitive MLS match. Toronto’s most famous fan, comedian and film star Mike Myers (‘Austin Powers’) talks about his love for the game and gives his hilarious verdict on how ‘Goldenballs’ will fare in his new galaxy.

To kick off the ‘WAGs USA’ strand, the show reveals all about Bianca Kajlich, wife of LA Galaxy captain Landon Donovan. Away from her footballing partner, Kajlich is better known as a Hollywood actress, having starred in ‘Halloween: Resurrection’, ‘Dawson’s Creek’ and ‘Vanished’.

The opening programme covers David Beckham’s first steps into American life and reviews the current standings in the MLS league. The North American season runs from April to November, with David joining mid-term. LA Galaxy have not enjoyed the best start to the season, languishing second from bottom in the western conference after ten games played. Fans at the Home Depot stadium will be hoping that David wastes no time in bringing his magic touch to this year’s campaign – and Soccer USA will be with him every step of the way.

Five is to follow David Beckham’s new high-profile career playing for LA Galaxy in the United States in a weekly magazine show, David Beckham’s Soccer USA, which will also be showing exclusive live coverage of his matches from Major League Soccer.

The series starts on Wednesday, July 25th at 7.15pm and will follow the league winner in both England and Spain with Manchester United and Real Madrid and his family as they adapt to a very different life in North America both on and off the field. Five will have exclusive access to the Beckhams and hear first-hand what the former England captain thinks of his new life.

The on the pitch action kicks off when Beckham makes his debut for LA Galaxy against Toronto live on Five at midnight on Sunday, August 5th.

The 45-minute programmes will also feature other well-known players who have made the switch to MLS, such as former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel and former Newcastle and West Ham keeper Shaka Hislop. There will also be a look at how top celebrities have taken to the game such as Tom Cruise, Eric Clapton and Steven Spielberg.

There will also be a look at ‘WAGS USA’ with Victoria not the only glamorous footballer’s wife gracing the VIP suites of the MLS. This regular feature will focus on the many famous and fabulous wives and girlfriends who are supporting their men this season, among them Bianca Kajlich, model and wife of Galaxy captain and team-mate Landon Donovan.
