Dirty Sainsburys Man

Sorry about the dreadful quality of the picture above, but unsurprisingly, there’s not much call for a high resolution image of a pointless Sainsbury’s commercial.

So why bother doing a crappy screen grab? Well… it’s because the old man featured in the advert has got my dander up to the point where I’m thinking of tracking him down and making him see the error of his ways and maybe do some community service or something.

I’ve always noticed stupid details in things (apart from the spelling mistakes in my own articles) and I figure that, sometimes, it’s what made me become a TV critic in the first place. I’m not one for picking holes in continuity because, effectively, people who do that should be strung up and left to stare at a badly looped montage of all the continuity errors ever.

The most recent thing I’ve noticed got my blood boiling… and I know that others have noticed it too.

In the new Sainsbury’s ad’, an old man is given a tiny cup of drink. He takes the tiniest of sips (probably because a full thimble would see him needing a wee all night) and then… PUTS IT BACK ON THE TRAY FOR SOME OTHER POOR SAP TO DRINK FROM THE SAME CUP!

Look, I know it’s small fry, but if I don’t get it off my chest I might explode.

I’ve been thinking about it so much that I’ve convinced myself that some marketeer made this event happen on purpose, so the commercial would get under your skin and stick in your mind subliminally.

You can watch the commercial in question here for yourself. Also, at around the 10 second mark… is that really Robert Kilroy Silk in the background?

So, in addition to The Dirty Old Man leaving his geriatric mouth-goo over everything he touches AND Kilroy-Silk, there’s the small matter of the predatory lust-man who tries to pull a staff member over yoghurt, which is clearly a thinly-veiled euphemism. This leaves us with an image of Sainsbury’s being full of spittle, potential rapists and Kilroy-Silk! The minute you enter the door, you have to choose which one of these things you want to side with! It’s too much.

I know, I know… I need to get a life.
