Don’t Blame the Builder

Tuesday 19 August 2008

Jo and Julian Fitzsimons have swapped their two-bedroom flat in London for a ?320,000 Victorian house in Sussex and have embarked on a major renovation of their dream home. Basing his quote on plans provided, their builder agreed to do the job in 12 weeks for ?42,000, but seven months on, with costs running higher than expected, the Fitzsimons are refusing to pay any more and the builder’s walked off the job, leaving the house uninhabitable. Can Jeff help these unhappy homeowners overcome their issues with their unhappy builder?

Each year, more than 100,000 building jobs in the UK go horribly wrong and it’s often the builders who end up with the blame. But the reality is, it’s a two way street. Putting on his hard hat, Jeff Howell brings all his experience to each site to mediate between the warring builders and home renovators. His aim: to bring the two sides back together and get the building work back on track. In well-to-do West Hampstead, a couple are having a ?43,000 extension to their flat. They met their builder at the funeral of a mutual friend, but the relationship soon turned sour. Can Jeff save the day?
