Kevin Mccloud’s Grand Tour

Tuesday, December 29 on M4

Kevin McCloud embarks on a major journey across Europe to explore the lasting legacy of the ‘Grand Tour’ on today’s Britain in a new four-part series. He follows in the footsteps of some of the most celebrated and notorious aristocrats, artists and architects of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, who travelled around Europe in history’s equivalent of the gap year.

Sunday, October 11 on 4

In the final leg of his journey, Kevin travels to Greece. Then ruled by the Turks, it was a fierce and inhospitable place but it held the source of classical architecture: the Parthenon. From here Kevin takes a helicopter to a remote island where he abseils down into the caves that Byron journeyed to. Exploring these caves and the majestic Alps inspired the grand tourists to think about the architecture of nature, and on their return home they inspired romanticism and neo-Gothic structures such as the Houses of Parliament, where Kevin ends his journey and reflects on his experiences.

Sunday, October 4 on 4

Tonight, Kevin follows in the footsteps of Robert Adam, the most influential neoclassical architect of the 18th century. Kevin focuses on the buildings of ancient Rome, including the Forum, Hadrian’s Villa and the Colosseum. Here, amidst the ruins, grand tourists would study by day, and then at night have sex with the multitude of prostitutes who were actually licensed by the Pope. Kevin continues on to Naples, where in the manner of grand tourists he climbs to the top of Vesuvius, before exploring the city’s most famous legacy: the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

He follows in the footsteps of some of the most celebrated and notorious aristocrats, artists and architects of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, who travelled around Europe in history’s equivalent of the gap year. It was a journey made in a search for art, enlightenment and adventure but also vice and debauchery. In each episode Kevin visits a different part of Europe, from Paris and Venice, to Athens and the Alps, revelling in the sights, sounds, tastes and smells.
