Good news for fans of American comedy with word today that ABC in the US has renewed Modern Family, Cougar Town and The Middle for new seasons.

The multi Emmy award-winning Modern Family has been given a third season alongside thirds for both Cougar Town and The Middle.

Drama Grey’s Anatomy and its spin-off Private Practice have also been greenlit for new seasons, with and eighth confirmed for Grey’s and a fifth for Private Practice.

Castle will also return with a fourth season.

ABC is yet to commit to new seasons for Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters, with the latter given only a 50% chance of returning.

Maya’s wedding day finally arrives this week but it is still unclear if an enraged Naomi will be attending. In the absence of the mother of the bride, the task of planning the shotgun wedding has fallen to Sam, with a lot of help from Violet. There is life-and-death drama this week when Sam and Addison go hiking and come across a couple of car-crash victims – one a pregnant woman trapped in her crumpled car, the other her husband who needs constant attention to stay alive. The stakes are raised further when Addison climbs into the car to aid the woman, only to become trapped as well. Will Sam be able to rig up an impromptu medical device to keep the husband breathing while he rushes off to get help?
