Project Essex

ITV2 has commissioned a brand new living soap for the channel.  The 10 part series, Project Essex (working title), will be made by Lime Pictures and be broadcast later in 2010.

A real life soap opera, Project Essex (WT) will follow a cast of characters as they go about their totally Essex lives.  The series is a hybrid between a soap opera, an observational documentary and a reality show, and the resulting storylines will create drama like you’ve never seen before.

Project Essex (WT) will take viewers into the uber-glamorous world of Essex where nail bars and nightclubs and other Essex haunts will act as backdrops to the action just as The Rovers Return and the launderette do.   And as the series is filmed right up to transmission it will be truly interactive with any press attention or fanbase that the show builds up being storylined straight back into the show itself.  For our cast of characters this will be a surreal experience – they will be finding out things about their loved ones simply by watching the show. And viewers won’t have to wait for the next TV episode to find out what happens next, because our casts’ stories will unfold daily online.

ITV’s Director of Digital Channels and Acquisitions Zai Bennett said “Project Essex is an exciting and unique proposition. We are filming as we go so the drama will unfurl as the series progresses. This really is a living soap, which will leave our viewers on the edge of their seats.”

Lime Productions’ Creative Director Tony Wood said “Essex is a perfect fit for Lime. The successful methods used in our factual shows like Living On The Edge and The Season will now be combined with the expertise behind Hollyoaks to create a new and exciting genre – a genuine living soap opera.”

“This hybrid genre between drama and reality is really exciting – it’s all the fun of a soap opera only this time not even the producers know how the stories end.”

Project Essex will be executive produced by Fiona O’Sullivan and overseen by All 3 Media’s Ruth Wrigley who was one of the first producers of Big Brother as well as Lime Creative Director Tony Wood who has worked on Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale.  It was commissioned for ITV2 by Claire Zolkwer, commissioning editor, ITV Entertainment.

A brand new soap is bound for UK screens with ITV making the announcement it will air later this year.

The new soap, called Project Essex, will occupy a position somewhere between a drama, an observational documentary and a reality show.

“Project Essex is an exciting and unique proposition. We are filming as we go so the drama will unfurl as the series progresses. This really is a living soap, which will leave our viewers on the edge of their seats,” said Zai Bennett, ITV’s director of digital channels and acquisitions.
