Red Dwarf

Sci-fi hit comedy Red Dwarf is set to return to our screens in a two-part special, 21 years after it first started.

The cast of the cult show are to reunite for a new storyline which will see them finally return to Earth. Red Dwarf: Back to Earth will be shown on UKTV digital channel Dave during the Easter holidays.

Two more new episodes are going to be made, including a making-of Back to Earth special, featuring behind the scenes footage of the creation of the show, and a special improvised Red Dwarf: Unplugged, where the cast will act with no sets, special effects or autocue for their lines..

Back to Earth, written by co-creator Doug Naylor, will begin 10 years on from when the crew of the Red Dwarf were last seen, with a “shock development” which will send the crew back to Earth.

The new episodes are to be filmed next month, and the original cast are to continue playing their parts, with Chris Barrie as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister, Danny John-Jules as Cat and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten.

The British Comedy and Emmy award-winning series ran from 1988 to 1999, with eight series and 52 episodes in total. At its peak, Red Dwarf pulled in around eight million viewers and was broadcast in more than 25 countries. Around 7.5 million copies of the DVD have been sold, and the show has a big sci-fi cult following, with many fan sites and events created to celebrate the series.
