River Cottage celebrates the strawberry with a 500-person summer fete. In preparation, Hugh and his gardeners, Mark Diacano and Victoria Moorey, raise plants in every available space: wellies, wine boxes and hanging water bottles all get stuffed in order to produce a huge crop.

Hugh is keenly devoted to the River Cottage garden, so when he learns slugs have been scoffing the soft cabbages he plans some drastic action. Snails have long been established on the River Cottage menu, so Hugh wonders if he can turn slugs into a culinary hit too.

Hugh rustles up two brand-new autumn recipes and shows viewers how to make easy Mexican chorizo, with two great ways to cook it. He also prepares the ultimate autumn belly filler: a simple, hearty “five root soup”. And River Cottage Head Chef Tim takes up a new challenge and tries to convert Hugh into a cauliflower enthusiast with a range of new recipes.

Hugh challenges his chefs Gill and Tim to help transform the fortunes of the much maligned Brussels sprout. Master butcher Ray helps Hugh find the most tender cuts in the relatively neglected forequarter of a cow and joins Richard the gamekeeper to stalk a Sika deer for a venison roast.
