seriously dirty dancing
This one-off 60-minute programme marks the 20th anniversary of one the most popular movies of all time: ‘Dirty Dancing’. To celebrate, presenter Dawn Porter –who has seen this iconic movie over 100 times –dons her pedal pushers and heads for America in search of Baby and Johnny.
The programme follows presenter, journalist and massive ‘Dirty Dancing’ fan Dawn as she goes on a comic pilgrimage to the United States hoping to fulfil her life-long dream of doing ‘The Last Dance’ with the film’s star, Patrick Swayze. She heads off to America armed with a pair of three-quarter-length white jeans, two watermelons and a life-size cutout of the hoofing heartthrob himself.
Along the way, Dawn uncovers the stories behind the casting and making of the film –such as the fact that both Billy Zane and Val Kilmer were considered for the role of Johnny Castle. She also visits the set; trains herself up as a dancer and generally wallows in the delight of ‘Swayzemania’.
Dawn has seen ‘Dirty Dancing’ over 100 times – and she is not alone in her love for the sleeper hit that became a huge cult classic. Two decades after the film was released, over 41 million copies of the original soundtrack, featuring ‘I’ve Had the Time of My Life’ and the Swayze-crooned ‘She’s Like the Wind’ have been sold, and an online community of fans is still growing. Dawn takes the ‘Dirty Dancing Trivia Test’ on the official fan site to prove her devotion –can she hold her own against fellow Baby and Johnny fans?
She also swaps stories with fans whose homes are shrines to the film and who claim their lives have been transformed by the influence of this comingof-age classic. “Making this documentary has been magical,” says Dawn. “The place, the myths and legends, I discovered it all. I hate to gloat, but I have really been having the Time of My Life!” Straight after the programme is a chance to catch the classic film itself.
