Sofia’s Diary

FIVER has secured a UK broadcaster first by acquiring the rights to the hit online drama, Sofia’s Diary from Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI), it was announced today. The announcement marks the first time for an online, UK-produced show to transition to broadcast (THUR).

Sofia’s Diary is a new multi-platform series which has recently premiered on the social media network, Bebo. The series, aimed at teenagers and twenty-somethings, which launched on Bebo on 14th March 2008, attracted an impressive five million viewers in its first two weeks online. The debut episode of the series, which airs on the internet at, received more than one million views in its first 48 hours. Since its online debut, almost half a million people are tuning in to watch each episode.

Sofia’s Diary follows the life of 17-year-old Sofia Taylor (newcomer Rachel Hyde-Harvey), charting her ups and downs as she adjusts to a new life living with her dad, step mum and baby step-brother after being sent to London by her mum after getting into trouble at school.

Starting from Monday 28th April on FIVER (formerly called Five Life), the 3 minute programmes will be screened each weekday at 4.55pm, with an omnibus thirty minute episode screened every second weekend.

Conceived by Nuno Bernardo, Sofia’s Diary was originally launched in Portugal in 2003 as an experimental web and mobile service. The original programme now has 200,000 visitors per month online and over 19,000 mobile subscribers. Sofia’s Diary has run for four series on Portuguese state broadcaster, RTP2, and has since been adapted for audiences in Brazil, Chile, Turkey, and Vietnam.

Sofia’s Diary is produced by Campbell Ryan Productions on behalf of Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI).

The UK production of Sofia’s Diary is a joint project between SPTI and BeActive, Produções Interactivas, S.A. Among the highlights of the show are Sony BMG acts, The Ting Tings and The Script which are woven into the storyline.

Writers on the series include Danny Stack and Marta Gomes led by Melanie Martinez. The series is directed by Manny Bonnet. The series was developed for FIVER by Graham Smith.
