Starlight: For the Children

Wednesday 16 February, 7:30pm on Five

This touching ten-part documentary series celebrates 25 years of the Starlight Children’s Foundation – the charity that brightens the lives of sick and terminally ill children by granting them once-in-a-lifetime wishes. In the opening instalment, sick Becky meets her idols Holly Willoughby and Fearne Cotton. ‘Starlight: For the Children’ follows the celebrities and extraordinary volunteers who give up their time to make the dreams of terminally ill children come true. Each year, over half a million children in the UK spend time in hospital, where they experience fear, pain and loneliness. Starlight aims to brighten the lives of the most seriously ill children by granting them a wish, and to provide hospitalised children with much-needed relief and entertainment. Each 30-minute episode follows these inspirational kids as they have their wishes of a lifetime granted by Starlight and its famous supporters. Wishes are as varied as a child’s imagination, and Starlight does its utmost to make as many as possible come true. Celebrities lined up to support the charity for the series include Fearne Cotton, Holly Willoughby, Formula One driver David Coulthard, astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Masterchef’s John Torode and Greg Wallace. Also on board are Bill Nighy, comedian Sue Perkins, Sir Richard Branson and Kim and Aggie. In the first episode, Starlight organises a pampering day for sick Becky. As she is enjoying a manicure, Holly Willoughby and Fearne Cotton tap on the window outside. A delighted Becky spends the rest of her day chatting with her two favourite celebrities, who come bearing a box full of goodies and plenty of tea and cake.
