The Gadget Show: Special Edition

Monday 14 February, 8:00pm on Five

Channel 5’s consumer technology show returns for a brand new series. In the first episode, presenters Suzi Perry, Jason Bradbury, Ortis Deley, Jon Bentley and Pollyanna Woodward bring the show to a live studio audience at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry. Ortis and Pollyanna visit South Africa for a photography challenge, Jon teams up with dance troupe Flawless to test mp3 players and Jason and Suzi build indestructible phone cases. Ortis and Pollyanna are in Cape Town for the show’s most extreme photography challenge yet. Their first task is to capture the best possible panoramic image. The assignment takes the duo all over the city, lugging behind them some of the most advanced cameras and photography gadgets that money can buy. The setting for Pollyanna and Ortis’s next challenge is the breathtaking Shamwari Game Reserve, near Port Elizabeth. Going off-road and using the latest long-lens cameras, the pair must get as close as possible to some of the world’s wildest animals, including lions, rhinos and elephants. Finally, the duo split up and make their way to separate locations to test some top-of-therange action camcorders. While Polly ends up participating in the world’s third-highest bungee jump at the famous Bloukrans Bridge, Ortis finds himself becoming live bait when he goes diving with great white sharks. But which presenter will return home with the killer shot? Meanwhile, Jason and Suzi take part in a highstakes challenge in the studio. Each has until the end of the show to build a tough protective case to guard their mobile phone against a number of potential hazards, which include a thorough soaking, a fall from a great height and an encounter with some explosives. Elsewhere this week, Jon Bentley teams up with streetwise ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ dance troupe Flawless to put the latest sports mp3 players through their paces. The compact gadgets are designed to withstand physical activity, but how will they fare during Flawless’s high-energy, acrobatic routines?
