The Gruffalo

The Gruffalo, the modern children’s classic by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler will be transformed into a film on BBC One this Christmas.

The film will have a sterling, all-star voice cast which features Robbie Coltrane as the Gruffalo; Helena Bonham Carter as the narrator’ James Corden as the Mouse, Rob Brydon as the Snake; John Hurt as the Owl and Tom Wilkinson as the Fox.

Jay Hunt, controller of BBC One, says: It’s a real privilege to bring a modern classic like The Gruffalo to BBC One. This captivating animation is a charming addition to the channel.

The Gruffalo tells a magical tale of a mouse who takes a walk through the woods in search of a nut. Encountering three predators who wish to eat him – a fox, and owl and a snake – the plucky rodent has to use his wits to survive, creating an imaginary monster who then turns out to be only too real.

Axek Scheffler’s brilliant artwork is being brought to life with a unique mixture of model and CGI animation.

Julia Donaldson says: “I’m very excited by what I have seen of the animation, in particular by how faithful it is to the original story, which incorporating lost of imaginative touches to bring the deep dark wood alive.”

This looks like a dead-cert to be a Christmas classic for years to come for both children and adults.
