The Secret of Eel Island

Sunday 28 January: 09.30–09.45

The children’s drama series following the adventures of a young boy on a magical island draws to an explosive close this morning. Eel Island was once home to the mysterious Eel Catchers, but they were chased away and only Sapphire now remains. With the help of Scott and the old junkshop owner Pearl, Sapphire battles to protect the secret of the island from would-be invaders. Today’s series finale sees the malevolent Green Beryl make a final attempt to breach the island’s defences before the Eel Catchers return.

Now that the eclipse is over and the shadow has lifted from the sun, Malachite has gathered the Eel Catchers together ready for their return to the island. Green Beryl, however, has other ideas. Having seen Homer the pigeon flying messages between the Junk Emporium and the island, she becomes determined to find out who lives there and prepares a final assault. Injuring Homer, Green Beryl forces Sapphire out of hiding and vows to get rid of the troublesome child once and for all. A passing wading bird gives her an idea and it’s not long before Beryl has found a way to walk across the sinking sand!

With Green Beryl finally on the island, Sapphire knows she is in real danger, but her family are still nowhere to be seen. It is up to Scott and Pearl to help her, but by the time they arrive on the island, Sapphire and Green Beryl have disappeared. The old woman has grabbed handfuls of the precious Name Stones from the cave and is throwing them into the sinking sand to prevent the Eel Catchers from returning. Sapphire tries desperately to recover the stones, but finds herself sinking deeper and deeper into the deadly mud. As Green Beryl makes her exit, Scott arrives – and not a moment too soon. As Sapphire once did for him, Scott enlists the help of Kesali to save his friend.

At that moment, the Eel Catcher boats appear on the horizon, with Sapphire’s parents visible amongst the crowd. But with the Name Stones disappearing into the sand, will it all be too late?

The drama series following the adventures of a young boy on a magical island continues. Eel Island was once home to the mysterious Eel Catchers, but they were chased away and only Sapphire now remains. With the help of Scott and the old junkshop owner Pearl, Sapphire battles to protect the secret of the island. This week’s episode sees the return of Gypsy Jacaranda, a wise old Eel Catcher.

There is an eclipse coming and people have gathered all over Fair Hill to celebrate. Eel Catchers believe that an eclipse signals a new beginning and Green Beryl is quick to ask Jacaranda about the future of Eel Island. The old woman tells her that the way to the island will become clear “once the shadow on the sun lifts”. Green Beryl is overjoyed at the news – will her long wait to discover the secrets of the island finally be over?

When Sapphire hears that Gypsy Jacaranda is in the area, she tells Scott that she must visit her to learn about her future. Scott thinks this is a bad idea, but cannot stop Sapphire so accompanies her to Fair Hill, leaving Eel Island unguarded. Pearl is also enjoying the celebrations until he notices that Green Beryl has bought an old wooden sledge – it seems she intends to use a special mud horse to get across the sinking sand! It is up to Pearl to foil Green Beryl’s plan before the eclipse.

Meanwhile, Sapphire learns some important news about her future from Gypsy Jacaranda. She is also told that she must be back on the island by the time the shadow leaves the sun. As the eclipse begins, will she and Scott manage to get back to the island in time? And will there really be a new beginning for Eel Island?

Eel Island The drama series following the adventures of a young boy on a magical island continues. Eel Island was once home to the mysterious Eel Catchers, but they were chased away and only Sapphire now remains. With the help of Scott and the friendly old junk-shop owner Pearl, Sapphire battles to protect the secret of the island until her fellow Eel Catchers can return.

In the January 14th episode, Sapphire is astonished to hear a dog barking near the island and discovers a bedraggled greyhound swimming towards the shore. Horrified that someone could abandon an animal like this, Sapphire takes the dog to her Secret Place to nurse it back to health. Meanwhile, Scott brings a pile of his sister’s old clothes to the Junk Emporium to see if Pearl can find a use for them. Scott has often wondered why Pearl finds such delight in the things other people don’t want, so the old man explains that he can’t bear to see things thrown away. It seems that he is not the only one, as Sapphire is delighted when she spots the old clothes. She says she will use them to add to the patchwork quilt that her grandmother started many years before.

Looking at the dog, Scott imagines that it was discarded in much the same way as his sister’s clothes and realises that he may have the perfect home for the animal. When he arrives back at the Junk Emporium with the dog in tow, Pearl cannot resist and promises to look after the new arrival. It turns out that Pearl used to own a similar dog when he was a child. Will his new pet prove to be as fast as the old one?
