Richie, Connie’s best mate at school, is a self-confessed nerd who wishes the world were a simple, harmonious place. For him, the supposed moral and behavioural precepts that he has learned at school and at home are thrown into question by the differing perspectives of adults to the reverberations of “the slap”. Confused by this, as well as being the only one who knows Connie’s “secret”, he inadvertently sets off a chain of events which bring all the tensions, familial and marital deceits, all the unspoken truths, onto a collision course.

Jonathan La Paglia is Hector, Sophie Okonedo is Aisha, Melissa George is Rosie, Essie Davis is Anouk, Alex Dimitriades is Harry, Sophie Lowe is Connie, Lex Marinos is Manolis, Blake Davis is Richie.

Rosie, Hugo’s mother, is a woman whose whole life has been radically transformed by the birth of her baby. For Rosie, mothering has become a passionate vocation, and an opportunity for renewal. Her outrage at what she considers Harry’s abuse of her son becomes an obsession which threatens to overwhelm her, her husband, Gary, her friends and the world around her. Based on Christos Tsiolkas’s best-selling novel, The Slap is an eight-part Australian adaptation that traces the shattering repercussions of a single event upon a group of family and friends.

Harry is Hector’s cousin, he’s a self-made man, a mechanic with his own business, who has the perfect wife, the perfect child, the perfect house by the bay and who discovers that his aspirational achievements are about to become undone because, in a moment of rage, he slapped a child.

Harry sees what he did as just: “that spoilt kid deserved it”, and the resulting scorn heaped upon him as just more evidence of a world that has lost sight of “what is right and what is wrong”. He is most outraged by the charges of assault laid against him by Hugo’s parents and fears what this will do to his reputation, his lifestyle and, most importantly, his family.

Jonathan La Paglia is Hector, Sophie Okonedo is Aisha, Melissa George is Rosie, Essie Davis is Anouk, Alex Dimitriades is Harry, Sophie Lowe is Connie, Lex Marinos is Manolis, Blake Davis is Richie.
