TorchwoodjohnTorchwood creator criticises show

Torchwood writer Chris Chibnall has criticised the latest season of the show, saying Miracle Day lacked the show’s “essence”. “Whether you like or dislike Torchwood, it has an essence – of madness and cheekiness and sexiness, and fun and darkness, those sort of polar facets of what it’s about, of putting those things together – and somehow it lost a bit of that somewhere in the process,” he said.

Chris Albrecht told Multichannel News that a new season of the show is a possibility, although it may be a while before anything got underway.

“You know, Russell [T Davies] is so busy,” he said. “Obviously, we’re in touch with the BBC all the time. They are our partners on [new shows] DaVinci’s Demons and Harem.

“We told them, we stand by ready for any news, but I think it would be a while before Russell came back to Torchwood.”

The Sun today reports that Torchwood actor John Barrowman claims he has not “clashed” with the BBC over cutting a sex scene from the show, as has been reported.

Here’s the story…

JOHN Barrowman has clashed with the BBC by defending Torchwood’s axed explicit gay sex scene – saying it was NOT gratuitous.

The gay actor, who plays bisexual Jack Harkness, had filmed a romp with a barman for the current series.

TV Biz told this week how bosses cut it, fearing a viewers’ backlash.

But Barrowman insisted the scene was vital to the plot, saying: “It’s not gratuitous sex, it facilitates the story.

“It’s nothing they grab just to put on the camera and sensationalise it.”

He said more will be revealed about Jack’s past as the BBC1 sci-fi series continues tonight (9pm).

Barrowman, 44, said: “You go back into history with Jack and you discover an integral relationship that is part and parcel to what is happening. It’s a massive story.”

The PA today report that Torchwood star John Barrowman enjoys the thrill of having what he calls a “fan-gasm” on the set of Torchwood,

This apparently happens when he discovers who’s starring in the show with him.

Here’s the story…

The actor, who reprises his role as sexy time-traveller Captain Jack Harkness in the fourth series Miracle Day, tries not to know too much in advance about his own sci-fi series and who’s appearing in it, so he can enjoy the surprise.

“I don’t read ahead. I can’t give you any teasers. I don’t like to know, I’m a geek myself so I like to have my own little fan-gasm,” he said.

John and Eve Myles (as Jack’s Torchwood colleague Gwen Cooper) return for the new season alongside newcomers Bill Pullman as convicted murderer Oswald Danes and ER star Mekhi Phifer as Rex, who John said is “Jack’s worst nightmare”.

“What is great is that I don’t ask who the roles are being played by. I come into work and find Bill Pullman, president of the United States from Independence Day, in the make-up trailer,” he said.

“That’s why I do what I do. I don’t analyse it too much. I love doing the job, I don’t get too involved unless it’s my own show like Tonight’s The Night where I am co-producer. I leave it to the powers that be to make the decisions and I love getting a little fan-gasm myself.”

“We sign these secrecy clauses and we are not allowed to talk about what happens. But let me tell you, Miracle Day is jaw-dropping,” he added.

Torchwood: Miracle Day continues on BBC One.

John Barrowman has expressed his interest in returning to Doctor Who again.

The actor debuted on the BBC One series back in 2005 as Captain Jack Harkness before reprising the role in spin-off series Torchwood.

“I’ve always said that if I’m asked to go back toDoctor Who, I’ll go at the drop of a hat,” Barrowman told Zap2it. “That’s where Captain Jack got his beginnings.”

The actor confirmed that the idea of  a return of his character had already been discussed by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and Torchwood creator Russell T. Davies.

“It’s in the cards, but who knows whether it will happen?” he said.
