Comedy drama thingy Ugly Betty may have won awards in the past, but alas, US broadcaster ABC has had enough, axing the show after four years on air.

The America Ferrera fronted show airs on Channel 4 in these shores and will not return after the climax to its fourth series later this year.

Ratings have fallen in the latest run in both the UK and USA.

“We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season,” said executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson in a joint statement.

“We are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion.”

Whilst the show is nice to look at and perfectly distracting if you’re not in the mood for brain food, things like this seem to have waned in popularity in recent years. Kooky sitcoms just don’t attract the same amount of love they once did.

Ugly Betty started its Channel 4 tenure with a very respectable 4.5 million viewers. However, those ratings slowly declined, clearly not helped by the fact that Channel 4 kept shoving it around the schedules. The recent episodes have been hitting somewhere between 1 and 2 million.

So will the close of the show finally see the ‘takes off the glasses and shakes the hair loose’ shot where everyone realises that Betty isn’t a minger at all?
