Interview with Timmy Mallett - Voice of the Beeps

interview with timmy mallett, the voice of smelly in the beeps

what appealed to you about this new animation? “I’m thrilled to be involved in something like this: it’s funny, quirky and it’s got something rather special about it. It’s lovely to be involved with a homegrown British animation.”

is this the first animation you have voiced? “Yes. And it’s nice to play such a different character – Smelly Beep, who is surrounded by a load of sock people [the Sockroaches]. They’re brilliant; they pop up every now and then and sing a little song. I’ve started looking into my own laundry basket and expecting the socks to start singing now!”

How much of your own personality were you able to bring to the character of smelly? “I think quite a bit, really. The director gives you a few little pointers on the script, but then they’re very keen to let you experiment with it, and I think that’s very exciting. The voices were recorded before the animation itself was done, which means that when the animators listen to the way you have read the script, they can tailor their images accordingly. Doing things that way round gives you much greater creativity, and it’s a joy to do.”
