the diet doctors: inside & out
susan french (2/8)
The Diet Doctors: Inside & Out is back for a third series with a brand new team of expert presenters. Dr Samina Showghi, nutritionist Pam Stepney and chiropractor Dr Ben King will take on some truly shocking eating and lifestyle habits. In 12 short weeks, the team will perform some amazing medical makeovers as they show what can be achieved by ditching the bad diet and taking on a healthy lifestyle. Tonight’s edition sees the experts come to the aid of Susan whose unhealthy diet has caused a range of medical problems.
Using cutting-edge medical tests, demonstrations and experiments, Dr Samina and Pam will illustrate the devastating effects bad diets can have on our internal organs and outside appearance. Together they will devise an easy-to-swallow plan of action. Dr Ben will work alongside them correcting the posture and bad habits that, unknown to the patients, are storing up serious problems for the future. He will also ensure that the patients are adopting an exercise plan that is right for them and guarantees maximum results for minimum efforts. The team will be on hand to diagnose viewers’ medical problems and advise on the easiest and quickest ways to cure them.
The show will also be uncovering new food trends – what are they and how they can affect you? Plus horrifying true stories –and a stomachchurning look at what is really lurking in your food.
In this second programme of the series, the team meet 42-year-old Susan French. Weighing over 18 and a half stone and standing at only 5 foot 3 tall, she suffers from acute angioedema and urticaria, both of which are allergic reactions to foods like nuts, eggs and wheat, as well as some medicines and latex. Urticaria is an outbreak of swollen weals on the skin that appear suddenly. Angioedema is similar, but the swelling occurs beneath the skin. It causes deep swelling around the eyes and lips, and sometimes of the genitals, hands and feet. With the ever-present risk that her airway could be blocked, should her throat, tongue or lungs become swollen, Susan has to carry an EpiPen containing adrenaline with her at all times.
Susan also suffers from lymphoedema in her legs – a swelling that develops as a result of an impaired lymphatic system. She has bad varicose veins on her legs, which had been stripped away in the past, but have come back worse.
Susan has tried a variety of diets, slimming clubs and pills. She has also had her jaw wired in the past and her stomach stapled. The stomach stapling saw her lose over ten and a half stone, but most of this weight has crept back on. Susan’s diet is full of high-sugar, nutritionally deficient foods. On a bad day, Susan performs a ‘ritual’ that involves stocking up on chocolate, biscuits and cakes before an all-day binge.
Susan is ready and willing to change her life. She acknowledges that she has an emotional dependence on high-fat comfort foods and is determined to break it. She has had a traumatic past, including the unexpected death of her third husband, Paul, two years ago. Paul made her realise that she can feel good about herself and she wants to get back to that.
The Diet Doctors team soon comes up with a plan to help Susan get her diet and her health back on track. Out goes constant grazing, replaced by regular meals and snacktimes. Her diet is adjusted to alleviate her medical problems and will include foods that are high in protein, iron and vitamins C and B12 –as well as certain foods that assist the body in absorbing iron. How will Susan’s body respond to this new regime?

I think this show shows you that you can loose weight with the right diet and exercise BUT you have to make sure you get all the right vitamins and minerals and don't go extreme. I think it works because I have done it myself. I don't believe in any crash diets because you will just end up gaining the weight back on after stopping the diet. And for your knowledge Dave doctors don't know anything about healthy diet. They will just look at the screen of their computer and prescribe you drugs. I went to doctors with abdominal pain and what did I get? Drugs which didn't help, they just made me worse. I started a healthy eating plan which got rid of my abdominal pain AND I managed to loose weight. After that I haven't bothered with my doctors. I am not saying what the Diet Doctors do it is the best way because they don't actually show the diet plan. This would be very interesting to see but because everybody has their own individual means maybe they have decided to leave this out. And what genuine MEDICINE would help you loose weight and be healthy???Dave
Sorry to say I think this show is just complete and utter rubbish. Its little better than faith healing, there is barely any real scientific evidence behind what these guys do, certainly most of it is unsupported by proper clinical trials, they just seem to be consumate confidence trickesters to me. If ANY of this rubbish actually worked dont you think your own doctor would be prescribing it to patients. Why does Channel Five continue to screen this show. As far as i can see they totally ignore any genuine medication their patients are taking and attribute any improvement (ususally VERY hard to see) to their own nonsense.amanda

Hi I have just watched your show of where you have helped a male gain weight as oppose to loose weight ... and in this show you spoko of insomnia which I thought I had because for at least 2 years now I have extreme trouble sleeping - and I have only just turned 17 years old - but by watching your programme I have come to realiser that I have a sleep eating disorder (which I never thought there was such thing) and as I am so young and have put on weight recently, I am worried about my health for the future.
Truthfully I should visit the doctor more, but I am scared of the truth as I know I am very unhealthy but I am too scared to change my diet off my own accord as I'm afraid of putting on wieght - I now weigh 8stone 12pounds, that's a gradual increase from 8stone 5-8pounds. I rearly eat in the day, and eat a little around 6-8pm but drink lots through the day! I go to sleep late (around midnight) and wake up at least 3 times and only end up having an overall 3-5 hours sleep on a week day - as I have college, but on the weekend the same sleeping pattern happens, but then instead of staying awake at 6am like I would do for college, I would go back to sleep and stay asleep till 11ish. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I eat alot - generslly being biscuits, bread and left over dinner meals.
Because of eating in the night I always feel extremely stuffed and bloated in the morning so I have been making myself sick alot recently which I know I shouldn't but it's addictive and an easy way of making me feel not so fatty and stuffed.
I exercise 5-7 a week doing my routine workouts and I'm pretty obsessed with making sure that I walk distances every day - making sure I clock up at leasy 6,000 steps.
Due to my bad diet I always feel bloated and tired, and recently my back seems to be aching quite alot recently and I get alot of cramps in my feet, calf muscles and sometimes arms and I also irregularly do a poo - being maybe once or twice a week and sometimes less, unless I use something to force it i.e. senekot. But, I really would appreciate the help from someone who I know that wha they are saying is the correct thing to do and will have the correct outcomes. Obviously I do want to eat healthily and have a regular sleep pattern, go to the toilet reguarly and feel energetic but I don't know hot to go about it - and I'm scared of what's happening to my body right now or what will happen if I carry on as I am only 17 therefore I can turn around my health now before it's maybe too late.
Therefore, would I be able to appear on the show? Or am I too young? If I can, how would I go about this?
Thanks

I agree with Sarah about doctor Ben, what's a fact is just a fact.
sarah
Not meaning to be shallow or anything...but isn't Dr Ben the most gorgeous man you've ever seen! i'd love him to come and crack my back!
in all seriousness though - these guys do a great job and i like the fact they are "proper" doctors unlike some small scottish "doctors" we know and love to hate!
The folk on the show just goes to prove - you can achieve anything with diet and exercise!

Hi there
For help with the sinus problems but out all aspartame from your diet. It is in crisps, fizzy juice, chewing gum and lots of other everyday products. After a few days in which the symptoms might get worse you will notice an amazing improvement.

Just finished watching the diet doctors with Marie Gough. Gosh. Dont you just hate it when folks whinge and whine about something but not prepared to put the work in. I must say I have no sympathy for the woman. Almost from the start you could tell she had no intention. She was just full of excuses and in total denial about her health. She kept going on about not wanting to be skinny. Hello. It was never about being a size 8 but losing weight counteracting health problems which are going to cause horrendous health problems in the near future. I thought she wanted see her kids grow up! Its individuals like her that cost the NHS countless amount of money because they can't be bothered to exercise some discipline and self control. Marie you asked for help stop wallowing in selfpity, get off your dainty derrier and take on board advice given by the health professions who were trying to assist you. They are the experts not you! You acted like you were doing them a favour! So what if you didnt like the nutritionist - grow up for chrissake. (excuses again) Dont shoot the messenger. Your weight is not caused by some hormonal dysfunction but by self sabotage. Stop eating crap. Stop blaming everyone else for your lack of discipline and get on with it. You can do it.

I HAVE MY OWN THEORIES, MY MEDICAL HISTORY IS AS FOLLOWS;
* JAN 06 TROUBLE WITH SINUSES, TOOK IBRUPOFEN, PARACETAMOL AND NASAL SPRAYS PRACTICALLY UNTIL SINUS OP IN JAN07. NOW SINUS IS WORSE THAN EVER. PAINS OVER EYES AND IN HEAD, BLOCKED NOSE, LOT OF DISCHARGE FROM NOSE. NOW WAITING FOR NOSE X RAY TO SEE IF STILL HAVE INFECTION SURGEON SAID I HAD IN JAN07.
* FEB07 TWO WEEKS AFTER OP JOINTS BECAME SO STIFF AND PAINFULL WAS PUT ON STEROIDS BY RHUMATOLIGIST WHO SAID I HAD ARTHRITIS. PAINS WENT FOR A WHILE BY ABOUT 90% CAME OFF STEROIDS AND PUT ON SULFASALAZINE. SWELLED UP AGAIN AND JOINTS STIFF AND PAINFULL HENCE TWO WEEKS AGO PUT BACK ON STEROIDS, NOT HAPPY BECAUSE WAS OVERWEIGHT BEFORE STEROIDS NOW LOOK LIKE BALOON, PUT ON AT LEAST ONE AND HALF STONE SINCE BEEN ON STEROIDS.SWOLLEN ETC
* HAVE ALWAYS PASSED URINE A GREAT MANY TIMES FOR YEARS BUT NOTICING IT MORE NOW, WORRIED ABOUT DIABITIS.
* RE ARTHRITIS... TOLD DUE TO INFECTION IN BODY. COULD IT BE THE INFECTION I HAVE IN MY SINUSES?
* COULD IT BE BECAUSE I CAUGHT MALERIA ON MY HONEYMOON TWENTY YEARS AGO?
* HAVE LUMPS UNDER SKIN, IN ARMS, SEEM TO BE GETTING MORE BUT TOLD ITS NOTHING.
* HAVE DIARRHEA A GREAT DEAL.HAVE BEEN SIGNED OFF WORK, NOT GOOD.
* HAD CARPELL TUNNEL OP ON BOTH HANDS SIX YEARS AGO.
* IM SURE ALL I NEED IS SOMEONE WHO HAS THE TIME AND EXPERTESE SUCH AS YOURSELVES TO LOOK AT ALL THE CONDITONS AND THINGS WILL FALL INTO PLACE AS TO HOW I CAN LEAD A HEALTHIER PAIN FREE LIFE.
GP'S DON'T HAVE TIME ETC TO PROPERLY FIND OUT WHY THINGS ARE HAPPENING, JUST DO THEIR BEST TO PRESCRIBE STEROIDS ETC WHICH ONLY GET RID OF THE PAIN FOR A WHILE, THEN IT COMES BACK WITH AVENGENCE ONCE OFF THEM AGAIN, GOING ROUND IN CIRCLES.
COULD YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ME, I KNOW HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT, I HAVE DONE IT A FEW TIMES, BUT NOW THINGS ARE LOOKING BLEAK I AM GOING TO LOSE WEIGHT AND LEAD A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, BUT WHILST ON STEROIDS ETC IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE.
