Plasma vs LCD

Monday 19 February, 19.15–20.00 on FIVE

Continuing this evening is the sixth series of the ever-popular consumer technology show, presented by Five’s resident gadget experts Jason Bradbury, Suzi Perry and Jon Bentley. In this week’s episode, Jason and Suzi battle it out in the plasma versus LCD war, and Jon investigates the ‘bridge’ digital camera.

A flatscreen television is one of the most expensive gadgets that any household can buy, so to help guide consumers through the minefield of choice, Jason and Suzi head to the shops. Checking out all the contenders, the pair cover plasma and LCD screens and examine the range of sizes available. When they have made their choices – Suzi a plasma and Jason an LCD – a group of football fans is gathered and a fake pitch assembled. The screens are then placed at either end of the pitch as goals, and the machine that attracts the highest viewing figures is crowned the ultimate flatscreen.

Also in this week’s show, Jon goes on assignment to test out a strange breed of digital camera – the so-called ‘bridge’ camera – designed to bridge the gap between a compact digital camera and a digital SLR. A small camera with a big lens does, in principle, sound like a great idea – but are bridge cameras really a good compromise, or just horribly flawed mutants?

To find out, Jon heads out with a trio of likely looking examples on three challenging professional assignments. He’s off to photograph a dog show, a hen party and a landscape to discover which, if any of the cameras, is up to the job.
