Monday 12 February: 19.15–20.00

The consumer technology show returns today for a sixth series. In this first episode, Jason Bradbury and Suzi Perry set out to buy all the gadgets a house needs for £500, Jon Bentley joins forces with Chris Ryan to test binoculars, and the team present the show’s Christmas competition winner with a pile of prizes.

February is traditionally the month of the skint as we all pay off our Christmas credit-card bills – bad news for those who are after some new gadgets. But it is possible to buy pretty good stuff on the cheap – you just need to know where to look. Suzi and Jason are allocated two identical houses and a £500 budget to kit them out with as much gadgetry as they can buy. Suzi is allowed to hit the streets, while Jason is restricted to using the net. It’s a must-see for anyone seeking a gadget on the cheap.

Jon is on a mission of a different kind this week, joining ex-SAS writer Chris Ryan to test binoculars. Traditionally the preserve of birdwatchers and trainspotters, binoculars have turned gadgety in recent years. You can now get them with wide angles, image stabilisation and memory-card slots to record those classic far-off moments onto. But will any of them be any good for seeing objects in the distance? Chris tries out a series of models and reveals what you should look for in the perfect pair.

And if you ever wonder who gets all the show’s competition booty, now’s your chance to find out, as the show pays a visit to the house of last series’ winner. It was the programme’s biggest-ever prize haul: 40 must-have gadgets packed up in a very big van and driven to the winner’s house on the Isle of Wight. Check it out to see what sort of goodies you can win if you enter this week’s competition.
