Thomas & Friends: Toby’s New Whistle

The ever-popular children’s animation continues. Celebrating the 65th anniversary of the stories, this new series is wholly produced in CGI, bringing a fresh, modern look to Sodor and giving the characters greater freedom to move.

The latest series of ‘Thomas & Friends’ features a number of new characters. Victor is the manager of the Sodor steam works. He is a very busy engine, but has a heart of gold and a good sense of humour. Kevin is a friendly crane who works with Victor at the steam works. While he may be inexperienced, he’s always ready to lend a helping hook. Hiro, meanwhile, was the first steam engine to arrive on the island. Originally known as the Master of the Railway, Hiro is one of the oldest and strongest engines on Sodor.

Based on the original stories written by the Reverend W Awdry, Thomas & Friends invites children into a world of imagination where the exploits of a cheeky little tank engine and his trusty pals reflect all manner of life lessons. This series retains the traditional liveaction animation alongside new CGI effects that make the engines’ mouths move as they talk and allow the human characters to walk around their railway world.

In Monday’s episode, it is Mr Percival’s birthday and Sir Handel is going to tell the story of the Man in the Hills. While picking up a load of presents, Thomas finds a mysterious shape in the side of a hill and decides to reorganise Mr Percival’s party.

Tuesday’s instalment is ‘Thomas Puts the Brakes On’. Thomas has been given the job of delivering specially made blocks for the Sodor River Bridge, but things go awry when his brakes begin to fail...

In Monday’s episode, Duncan feels hurt when, instead of a train ride, Mr Percival decides to take the twins for a birthday trip in a hot-air balloon. The upset engine lets the balloon fly away on purpose – but soon regrets his actions.

Tuesday’s instalment is ‘James Works It Out’. James ignores Hector the truck’s advice and sets off in the middle of some bad winter weather. But when he gets stuck in a snow drift, James soon wishes he had listened to Hector.

In Monday’s episode, a big, brash engine called Hank offers to help Thomas with his chores, only for the little engine to shrug off his assistance. But Thomas comes to regret being so hasty when he cracks a cylinder and needs some help!

In Monday’s episode, a photograph of the engines is to be taken for a big billboard, but all hell breaks loose when Diesel accidentally rolls in front of the camera and obscures Thomas!

Along with some old favourites, a number of new characters make their debut, including Whiff the rubbish engine and a big, black truck named Hector the Horrid!

In this morning’s episode, Duncan becomes fed up with his straw deliveries, so he decides to try some of the other engines’ jobs instead. But he soon finds himself easily distracted...

In Monday’s episode, ‘Sir Handel in Charge’, the Thin Controller charges Sir Handel with preparing a train full of logs for Thomas to collect. But Sir Handel spends so long looking for the best engines to help him that the train still isn’t ready when Thomas arrives. Can his friends pitch in to help?

This morningthere is a double bill, beginning with ‘Hector the Horrid.’ Thomas meets a big grumpy truck called Hector the Horrid who roars at him and scares Rosie. When Thomas decides that he has had enough, he knocks Hector flying off the track –but then discovers the real reason behind Hector's unfriendly behaviour. Following this is ‘Don’t Be Silly Billy’, in which Thomas is given the task of showing new engine Billy what to do. Billy calls Thomas a bossy engine and races away –but soon realises that he should have listened to Thomas.

Thomas fans are in for a real treat this Christmas Eve, with this special extended episode. All the trains are busy preparing for the construction of a new airport, but tension between the steam engines and the diesels threatens to ruin everything. Will they manage to pull together in time to build the airport and welcome lots of holidaymakers to Sodor?

It is summertime on Sodor, and a busy period for all the engines. At this time of the year, they collect lots of holidaymakers from the docks and show them all of the island’s spectacular sights like the seaside, the Scottish castle and the splendid Sodor suspension bridge. This summer, however, a new airport is to be built which will bring more visitors than ever before –and this means that there are lots of jobs for the excited engines to do.

In this morning’s episode, Thomas suggests a game of Hide and Peep while he and Percy are waiting for an important cargo ship at the docks.

In tomorrrow’s episode, ‘Gordon and the Engineer’, Gordon must take an important engineer to repair some points but ends up picking up the wrong person at the station! Later in the morning there is a chance to see the special extended episode ‘Thomas –Calling All Engines’ [see Monday Must See for details].

Wednesday’s episode, ‘Thomas to the Rescue’, finds Thomas afraid when Diesel tells him that old-fashioned engines are to be phased out.

Thursday’s episode is ‘As Good as Gordon’. When Emily is given the job of pulling Gordon’s express, she tries too hard and makes mistakes.

When the Fat Controller announces some new routes in this morning’s episode, Emily is pleased to be assigned the flour-mill run. The troublesome trucks, however, seem to have other ideas...

On Tuesday, in ‘Chickens to School’, a tired Thomas is asked to perform three tasks. He is meant to take some chickens to the market, some sheep to the farm, and the children to school, but everything gets muddled up!

Wednesday’s episode is ‘Gordon Takes Charge’. When asked to show the other engines what to do, Gordon begins to show off – with disastrous consequences!

Thursday’s episode, ‘Thomas and the Tuba’, sees Thomas collect a brass band from the docks. But has he left someone behind?

This week sees more new episodes of the timeless preschool series. Based on the books by the Reverend W Awdry, the programmes follow the adventures of Thomas the tank engine and his friends who live on the imaginary island of Sodor.

When Toby is given the job of taking milk across Sodor in this morning’s episode, his journey takes him up Gordon’s Hill. Gordon gets stuck behind the struggling Toby and tells him that he’s not a proper engine.

On Tuesday, in ‘Percy and the Magic Carpet’, Percy is proud to be chosen to collect an important package from the docks, but is disappointed to learn that his cargo is just a carpet.

Wednesday’s episode is ‘Thomas and the Circus’. The circus is coming to Sodor and all the engines are excited – especially Thomas, who is asked to collect the trucks from the docks.

Thursday’s episode, ‘Percy’s Big Mistake’, finds Percy jumping to a wrong conclusion when he overhears Sir Topham Hatt mention the words ‘Percy’ and ‘scrap’.

Wednesday’s episode is ‘Spic and Span’. The railway inspector is coming to the island of Sodor to give a special prize to the smartest engine, so all the engines strive to look their best.

Thursday’s episode is ‘James Goes Too Far’. When the Fat Controller gives James the job of delivering coal to all the stations in Sodor, James decides he is too busy and important to help the other engines.
