Anthony Maley’s life took a terrible turn two years ago after his home was destroyed by a gas explosion on his street.

The company repairing the gas mains was not at fault, so the family were left to claim on their insurance and spend 10 months in temporary accommodation while they waited for their house to be rebuilt.

But to add insult to injury, Anthony was in for a new shock when a power bill arrived in the post from British Gas. It covered the period his house had lain in rubble, when no meter was connected and no gas or electricity had been used.

He tells Tonight: “Here’s the bill. We couldn’t believe it. It’s not a lot but it’s the principle of the thing. I’d told them and all the other utilities that the house was unusable and British Gas were the only ones to send me a bill.

At a time when Britain is fighting a national epidemic on obesity, the news that McDonald’s is back in the good books with consumers is a depressing prospect to its fiercest critics.

Last year, UK sales were up six per cent. In December, the burger chain sold 88 million meals. For the first time in years, the company is opening new outlets across Britain.

It’s a tremendous comeback for the company considering just a few years ago it was battling unflattering portrayals by documentaries like Super Size Me – where Morgan Spurlock became ill after living solely on McDonald’s food for a month. A move towards healthier living was blamed for the company’s British profits taking a massive nosedive.

We’re already paying £5 a gallon for diesel and industry experts predict it won’t be long before petrol prices hit the same record level.

While drivers can’t change what they pay for fuel, they can potentially make savings by changing the way they use fuel, reports Quentin Willson.

In Fuel’s Gold: Tonight, Quentin enlists six drivers to help assess just how much more we can get out of our petrol tanks by undertaking some changes to our cars, driving style and vehicle maintenance.

The programme discovers whether swapping an old car for a new one, driving in a more fuel-efficient ‘green’ way, maintaining a poorly maintained car, switching from petrol to diesel, switching from petrol to premium fuel, and finally using an internet gizmo can improve overall fuel efficiency. Then, after additional costs are taken into account, Quentin reveals what savings can be made.

But if you assumed that the Revenue would spot any mistakes and correct them, you would be wrong.

Anne Collins drinks a few glasses of wine most evenings during the week and a bottle at the weekends, but she’d never classify herself as a binge drinker or someone who has a drinking problem.

Like many busy mums, she thinks of her daily tipple as a nice way to relax.

Anne, whose three children now range in age from 10 to 15, explains: “It became a habit when the children were young. I can remember when they were all very young, and Aaron had just started school and Brooke was two and Euan was in his rocker, and I can remember being in the bedroom with my foot on the rocker, sort of listening to Aaron read and doing something with Brooke and you know you’re just like, ‘Oh, I need a glass of wine!’”

But could Anne unknowingly be drinking dangerous amounts for her health and underestimating the impact that her drinking has on her family?
