Danny (Stephen Tompkinson) is busier than ever due to a drought affecting the region. But he has to turn away some locals with sick animals to attend to an abandoned baby hippo. Frustrated by his relentless workload, Sarah (Amanda Holden) decides to restart the animal hospital initiative. Without Kriel’s (Craig Gardener) knowledge, Amy (Jessie Wallace) helps Sarah organise a fundraiser. They hope to persuade Jordan (Strini Pile), a rich businessman staying at Mara, to invest in the hospital.

Caroline’s sister, Judith (Susan Blake), comes to visit the family. She immediately perceives the stalemate between Caroline (Hayley Mills) and Du Plessis (Deon Stewardson) and resolves to make Caroline realise how much she cares for him.

Meanwhile Max (Martinus Van Der Berg) surprises Rosie (Lucy Jo Hudson) with a huge diamond engagement ring. To him it symbolises their future together, but when he outlines his idea of the future to Rosie she begins to have doubts.

At the fundraiser Du Plessis is being auctioned off. The two sisters engage in a bidding war but Judith is triumphant. And Max realises that Rosie hasn’t told Danny and Sarah about their engagement and leaves, upset.

The fundraising goes well until Ekotto (Fana Mokoena), one of the locals Danny turned away from the surgery, interrupts and makes a scene, accusing them of wasting water. Matters go from bad to worse when Kriel (Craig Gardener) arrives, looking for his wife. He finds Amy in a compromising situation with Jordan. A furious Kriel blackmails Jordan into withdrawing his offer to invest in the animal hospital.

Downcast at this turn of events, Danny and Sarah are further stunned when they learn they are being fined for wasting water. Realising that Ekotto is behind this they visit his farm, only to find that his cattle are in a desperate situation. Danny and Sarah realise they are being blamed for Mara’s wastefulness because there are no fences between the reserves.

Rosie tries to talk to Max but it comes out all wrong. She’s devastated to think she’s ruined everything, especially when Max asks for the ring back. Amy is thrown out by Kriel and seeks refuge at Leopard’s Den. She is horrified when Danny enlists her help in a massive task: injecting Ekotto’s entire herd. But by the end finds she actually enjoyed it.

Judith’s plot isn’t having the desired effect, so she decides to up the stakes. To everyone’s astonishment she announces that she and Du Plessis are engaged.

Caroline finally can take no more and confronts Judith, who reveals that it was all a plan to make her jealous, which has obviously worked very well.

Danny determines to do something to help get water for the local villagers. A new well is needed, but that will cost a lot of money. Danny decides to sell some of their most valuable assets: animals. It’s a huge sacrifice. It all feels worth it, however, when the well is sunk, offering hope to the community. Sarah is dumbfounded when Amy takes her to the Mara pool, where livestock are drinking. Animals were last in line for the new well, so Amy decided to do her bit to help. Africa has begun to change the girl from Essex.

No one is more surprised than Danny when some locals, led by Ekotto, arrive with a truckload of timber. They want to help him achieve his animal hospital dream. A further surprise arrives when Max brings back Danny’s much loved cheetah, which had been sold, and reveals he sold Rosie’s engagement ring to pay for her. He tells Rosie he knows what’s important to her and he knows that they will be happy.

There is also a spot of rivalry in the camp this time around when Caroline’s sister, Judith comes to stay.

Hayley Mills explains the rivalry in the camp between Caroline and her sister Judith in episode six and her delight to be working alongside her cousin: “Du Plessis is looking for female companionship. Then my sister comes out in the shape of Susie Blake. She is my cousin and that was great fun because we haven’t worked together before. She made a bit of a play for Du Plessis, which again got Caroline’s pecker up.

“There is a bit of a dog-in-a-manger thing about Caroline. She feels Du Plessis is hers in a funny way, but she doesn’t want to go any further than that. It isn’t very fair on him. That was a really fun episode to film.”
